Squashed by a Wild Thing as a newborn, then plopped as a 1 year old onto the pavement of the University of Chicago campus to channel the academic tremors…baby Darwin is poised to lead a very complex and interesting life! Already looking forward to age 2!
Archives for 2013
Last year I traveled to Burundi, Tanazania, Uganda and Kenya to photograph women, children and families on behalf of the Uganda based organization Raising Voices. RV has devoted the last 10 years to violence prevention methods for women and children in East Africa. They have just created a new website which does an amazing job of explaining what they do, where they do it and what they are trying to accomplish. The website also presents some of the photos I have taken in a fantastic light which really furthers their ability to explain their work. The website was designed by Chicago based Advocate Creative which specializes in communications materials and creative services for the nonprofit industry. Please check out the website to see a great web design and accomplishment. Below are a few photos taken during my trip last year.
Stay tuned for the upcoming 2014 release of Chicago writer Elizabeth Blackwell’s first historical fiction novel “While Beauty Slept”…….
“Storybooks say that Sleeping Beauty pricked her finger on a spinning wheel and fell asleep for a hundred years, only to be awakened by true love’s kiss. But the truth is no fairy tale. Elise Dalriss, the onetime companion to the real girl who slumbered, is the only one left who knows what really happened. While the help may be invisible to their masters, the masters are not invisible to the servants. Elise saw it all—the beautiful queen who awoke each morning with tears on her pillow; the elderly spinster who in heartache shut herself away; the king’s brother, second in line to the throne yet first in line for revenge; the princess who yearns to be free; and the ambitious and frightening sister who cannot accept the fact that she will never rule. As Elise succumbs to the palace’s charms and riches, she may pay the ultimate price for abandoning her heart. In this rich and compelling novel of love and terror, friendship and fate, we are introduced to a heroine of extraordinary determination—the true heart of a legend—who reveals what it really takes to reach happily ever after.”
Meet Deanna…an up and coming child model who I photographed for her photo portfolio and comp cards for upcoming auditions. Good Luck Deanna!
Designer Lizzie Greco has a small part of keeping the art of handmade paper alive by building her business Craftbelly Frames + Mirrors around it. Each frame she makes begins as an unfinished wood frame that she wraps tightly with handmade decorative paper to impart a “painted-on” effect. A majority of the papers she uses are imported from other countries where the art of paper-making is alive and well. These papers include Lokta, Indian Rag, Chiyogami, and Katazome-shi.
Lizzie has have come up with a small collection for me that are elegant and subdued but beautiful and original. The collection consists of 7 different frames available in a full range of sizes from 4×6 to 20×24.
4. Silver Croc
6. Silver Snake
For a full range of frames with a wide color palette and some crazy cool patterns and designs check out the Craftbelly website.
